Atelier Rose is thrilled to welcome extraordinary Scottish artist Samantha Wilson (of Slow Burn Studio) for an experimental painting intensive exploring liquid watercolour, powder pigments pigment and charcoal drawing.
Join us in-person at Atelier Rose for a two-day experimental painting intensive exploring the expressive possibilities of liquid watercolour, powdered pigment and charcoal.
Drawing inspiration from artists including Marlene Dumas, Wangechi Mutu and Jim Dine, we will explore how fluid colour, expressive line and intuitive mark-making can transform photographic imagery beyond its original form.
Working from photographs as starting points, participants will be encouraged to loosen their approach to image-making, allowing water, pigment and chance to guide the creative process. Through layering, experimentation and drawing, we will explore how an image can dissolve, shift and re-emerge in unexpected ways.
Moving beyond the pursuit of technical perfection, this workshop invites participants to explore the atmosphere, emotion and hidden possibilities of an image, discovering what might exist beyond its immediate appearance.
An opportunity to slow down, experiment freely and reconnect with the tactile pleasures of water, pigment, paper and the hand.
No previous painting or drawing experience is necessary.

Samantha Wilson
Samantha Wilson (b. 1990, Scotland) is a Glasgow-based contemporary figurative painter whose practice draws on an extensive, self-curated archive of found, institutional and personal photographs collected over the past decade. Through processes of juxtaposition, layering and erasure, she creates psychologically charged images exploring vulnerability, memory and the ethics of looking. Working with liquid watercolour, powdered pigments and charcoal on paper and oil on canvas, her figures move between emergence and concealment, resisting fixed narratives and inviting slower, more attentive encounters.
Wilson holds a BA and MFA in Fine Art from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design and an MRes in Art & Humanities from the Royal College of Art, London, where her research examined painting as an empathetic practice. Wilson has received several awards and scholarships, including a Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST) Scholarship (2021) and the Royal Scottish Academy’s John Kinross Scholarship to Florence (2015). She was also selected for RSA New Contemporaries (2015) and has undertaken international artist residencies in India, Kenya and Barcelona.
Her work has been exhibited across the UK and internationally, with selected exhibitions including East End Open, Horsepower, Glasgow (2026); Soft, Quay Arts Biennial, Isle of Wight (2025); Rest in Limbo (solo), Fitzrovia Gallery, London (2024); Earthwise, Beaconsfield Contemporary, London (2023); Inner Workings, Cooke Latham Gallery, London (2023); and RSA New Contemporaries, Edinburgh (2015). Her work is held in public and private collections, including the Royal Scottish Academy’s John Kinross Collection and the University of Dundee.
Alongside her painting practice, Wilson is the founder of Slow Burn Studio in Glasgow, an independent educational initiative dedicated to drawing, painting and creative development.
